GovWiFi Guest Wi-Fi services for inter-Government roaming
A large Government Department sought to design, implement, and operate an 802.1x guest Wi-Fi network, known as GovWiFi, to provide a secure internet connection for Government employees and third parties. Inspired by Eduroam, the solution enables users to roam seamlessly between Government departments while maintaining secure connectivity.
Overview
GovWiFi is a guest Wi-Fi network designed for inter-Government roaming, offering internet-only access for employees and third-party users. The service ensures a secure and reliable connection while enabling users to move across various departments without disruption to their connectivity.
The Challenge
The Government faced the challenge of providing a secure and scalable Wi-Fi solution that met the stringent requirements of inter-departmental connectivity. Traditional guest Wi-Fi services lacked the flexibility and security needed for such a large-scale implementation across multiple departments.
The Solution
GovWiFi was piloted and subsequently launched as a production service. Using an 802.1x network and integrating with an Identity Services Engine (ISE) as an AAA proxy, the system forwards authentication and authorisation requests securely to GovWiFi AAA servers. This ensures robust security for all wireless endpoints.
The Outcome
The implementation of GovWiFi successfully delivered a secure and seamless guest Wi-Fi experience. Users can now roam between Government departments without losing connectivity, enhancing productivity and collaboration. The service supports secure internet-only access, ensuring compliance with security standards and simplifying connectivity for Government employees and third parties.
